We can expect sunny skies and high temperatures in the coming days. Overexposure to the sun, which can cause wrinkles, premature ageing, and even skin cancer, must be taken into consideration as we eagerly await the arrival of warmer weather. Finding the best clean sunscreen has taught us that not all sunscreens are equal.
An independent pharmacy called Valisure tested the sun care products of 69 different manufacturers before they were made available to the general public (find the full results here, on page 12). The CDC, World Health Organization, and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) all classify benzene as a carcinogen via inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion, and skin and/or eye contact. 78 of the samples tested contained the substance.
An occupational benzene exposure limit of one part per million (ppm) is recommended by the NIOSH, which is why findings by Valisure that some Neutrogena, Sun Bum, and CVS Health sunscreens contain two parts per million (ppm) or more are alarming. Although the FDA recommends a maximum daily exposure of 2 ppm of benzene, board-certified dermatologist Heather Rogers says that any exposure to benzene is more harmful than none at all, and that repeated exposure to benzene causes more DNA damage than a single exposure.
If your sunscreen appears on the list of potentially harmful products, you should stop using it immediately, because benzene has been linked to blood cancers like leukaemia, as well as cancers of the lungs, digestive tract, liver, ovaries, and breasts. Benzene is "widely distributed in the environment," according to the CDC, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's safe to breathe the air around it. "Benzene is a known carcinogen in humans. Blood cancers have been linked to products with traces of parts per million." Board-certified dermatologist Emily P. Gerson says.
Her concerns will be heightened by the FDA's report in 2020, which found that six sunscreen ingredients, including octocrylene, were found to be absorbed into the body at levels that could be measured in the blood by the skin and the digestive system. In light of these and Valisure's findings, Gerson and Rogers agree that the FDA should immediately recall the tainted products.
Is there a silver lining? The researchers found that the benzene in the sunscreen had nothing to do with the specific ingredients that went into its production. There are no downsides to selecting a sunscreen from the below list, which includes SPFs from leading brands like Neutrogeena, Banana Boat and La Roche-Posay. Spray sunscreens, on the other hand, are discouraged by Gerson for fear of inhaling the ingredients.
An official with Neutrogena confirms what we already knew: "The safety and well-being of those who will be exposed to the products we are developing is at the heart of our work. All of our personal care products are free of benzene, and we are currently investigating the claims made in this petition. Every ingredient we use is carefully selected to ensure safety and performance in accordance with our 5-step safety assurance procedure. As a business, we are dedicated to offering our customers high-quality, risk-free sunscreen."
